Powerlines to be moved away from school to protect children

Powerlines crossing the playground at Fredon school are to be moved away because of "potentially unsafe levels of electromagnetic fields". It has been off limits to students since September 2009. the playground will also be moved to where the parking area is now situated.

The work is expected to last between 30-45 days, and will take place predominantly during the summer break. The Public Service Electric & Gas has agreed to reimburse the school board up to $950,000 to reconfigure the school grounds and move the lines about 400 feet further from the school property.

The agreement between the school board and the state's largest utility came after school officials threatened to close on October 1st due to high levels of potentially hazardous EMFs that were found outside the school near the power lines.
