UK Department of Health recommends caution when using your mobile

23rd March 2011

The UK Department of Health has just produced a new leaflet on mobile phones and base stations. It is not very different from the one they released in 2005, if anything it is slightly more precautionary. An intermediate one which only was circulated in draft form, was more dismissive about health risks, but it was withdrawn and never printed.

The DH advise caution in using phones as "we have only been using mobile phones widely for the last decade or so and we need more research to look at the situation, particularly in the long term."

Do radio waves (such as from mobile phones) cause cancer?

The current DH response is "The UK Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research programmes reported in 2007 that no association was found between mobile phone use of less than 10 years and cancers of the brain and nervous system. However, as the situation for long-term exposures is less clear, the HPA (Health Protection Agency) continues to monitor the scientific evidence."

Alert message BlocSocks

If you are as concerned as the Department of Health about the possibility of phone use affecting your family's health you might want to consider one of EMFields BlocSocks which, used correctly, has been scientifically proven to reduce the radiation from mobile phones by over 90%.

Of course, in 2007 there had not been 10 years since the fastest uptake in mobile phone use which was in 2000. And there has been a significant, if small, increase since that time in tumours in the areas of the brain that are most exposed to mobile phone radiation. This could be an indication of the rise in risk to the first users of the new technology.

The UK Chief Medical Officers advise that children and young people under 16 should be encouraged to use mobile phones for essential purposes only, and to keep calls short. They suggest that if you are concerned, you can take steps to reduce your exposure. They are certainly covering their backs in case a link between the increase in brain tumours and use of mobile phones is established.
