Melatonin: Promotes Healthy Sleep Patterns

In numerous studies, Melatonin was shown to:

  • Treat insomnia
  • Enhance sleep quality
  • Fight jet lag symptoms
  • Slow the ageing process
  • Relieve symptoms of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
  • Has been found to help bring down blood pressure, reduce the severity of dementia, reduce the risk of cancer, may prevent Parkinson's Disease
  • It crosses the blood-brain-barrier and may protect against stroke

What is Melatonin and where does it come from?

Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating the body's biological clock. It is primarily produced at night by the pineal gland, which is located in the brain. There are other places where melatonin is produced including the gastrointestinal tract, so supplemental melatonin may help with gastric problems such as IBS. Taking supplemental melatonin at night helps the body's normal production, and enhances sleep quality. Sir Robert Winston found children who slept well produced melatonin at normal levels just before bedtime. Children who had sleep problems did not do so. Melatonin supplementation is safe for children as well as adults.

Why take Melatonin?

  • Insomnia: The ability to fall asleep and stay asleep may get a boost from melatonin supplementation, improving quality of sleep and supporting better wellbeing during the day.
  • Sleep problems caused by pain or stress: Frequent night-time awakenings can occur as a result of chronic pain or stress. In such situations, melatonin may help by encouraging sounder slumber.
  • Jet lag: Melatonin is known to help the natural circadian rhythm re-establish itself
  • Anti-Ageing: Research indicates that melatonin may be of value in extending life, by reducing the severity of some of age-related illnesses.
  • Depression: Sleep disturbance is one of the major symptoms of depression. This can be improved by taking melatonin regularly. Melatonin is also involved in mood control, so can help with bipolar disorders as well as depression.
  • Research, detailed in the article referred to has found that meltonin helps with a number of chronic illnesses, including preventing the likelihood of developing them, or reducing the severity of symptoms. These conditions include high blood pressure, cancer, Parkinson's disease, dementia, and stroke prevention.

Who needs it and what are the side effects?

The production of melatonin varies from individual to indiviual, and low levels can underpin many debilitating conditions. The amount of daylight during the day can improve subsequent melatonin production at night and bright light, especially blue light in the evening can reduce the amount of melatonin you produce. There are no side effects to taking melatonin, except feeling sleepy, so it is important that you ONLY take it at night before bedtime. You cannot overdose on melatonin, though the more you take, the sleepier you are likely to feel. Your body gets rid of what it doesn't need.
