What is Melatonin and where does it come from? Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating the body's biological clock. It is primarily produced at night by the pineal gland, which is located in the brain. There are other places where melatonin is produced including the gastrointestinal tract, so supplemental melatonin may help with gastric problems such as IBS. Taking supplemental melatonin at night helps the body's normal production, and enhances sleep quality. Sir Robert Winston found children who slept well produced melatonin at normal levels just before bedtime. Children who had sleep problems did not do so. Melatonin supplementation is safe for children as well as adults. Why take Melatonin?
Who needs it and what are the side effects? The production of melatonin varies from individual to indiviual, and low levels can underpin many debilitating conditions. The amount of daylight during the day can improve subsequent melatonin production at night and bright light, especially blue light in the evening can reduce the amount of melatonin you produce. There are no side effects to taking melatonin, except feeling sleepy, so it is important that you ONLY take it at night before bedtime. You cannot overdose on melatonin, though the more you take, the sleepier you are likely to feel. Your body gets rid of what it doesn't need. | © Copyright EMFields 2005 - 2012 |
