Washing Instructions

For canopies: Remove Hoop first
Hand or gentle machine wash 30c or below (Electrocloth can be washed at 40, but neither of the other materials can)
Use non bio detergent
Do not use fabric softener
Do not tumble dry, line dry only
Do not iron

Silver Bobbinet

Smell

The silver bobbinet material is woven using silvered strands and nylon strands of yarn. Nylon is well-known for its ability to absorb smells from the environment. This can then be detected emanating from the fabric itself. Nylon also loses the smell reasonably easily. We recommend hanging the material outside in the open air for a while possibly as little as half an hour) until the smell has dissipated.

Colour

The colour of the material tends to darken with time. This is due to surface oxidation of the silver, and does not, of itself, make the material lose its protective qualities. The darkening may also depend on other things, such as the material's exposure to UV radiation and other sources of environmental pollution. Do not wash the headnet purely because it has darkened. Each washing will reduce the material's screening properties.

Heat

The material is silver-plated nylon and is flammable. It must NOT be dried near sources of direct heat (such as a gas-fire or electric radiant heater), nor should it be dried in a tumble drier. Care must be taken to ensure that it is not exposed to sources of direct heat and open flames, including cigarettes.

Do not wash the material in a washing machine. Do not dry clean or iron the material.

Chemicals and Acids

To prolong the protective life of the material, we suggest you should avoid exposing it to air-borne chemical contaminants such as hair spray, deodorants, perfumes, cleaning sprays, (especially ones described as 'citrus'). It is important that you do not use any shampoo, or other chemical, on your hair which contains sulphur e.g. Lauryl sulphate, or citrus or other acid.

Do not handle the material after eating citrus fruit, without thoroughly cleaning your hands, as acid can destroy silver.

Chemicals from the environment outside your home, such as from busy roads, or industrial companies using chemicals in a production process, will degrade the material. The more the material is exposed to such pollutants, the quicker it will lose its effectiveness.

Sunlight

The material will gradually lose its screening properties as a result of exposure to the UV radiation in sunlight.

Washing

Please note that the silver bobbinet material (including headnets and bed canopies) should not ideally, be washed.

To refresh the material, use a damp sponge to remove dust, etc. Any form of washing will begin to reduce its shielding effectiveness, so it is important that as little is done to the material as possible. However, if you feel you really want to wash it we recommend hand washing in lukewarm water, no hotter than 30 degrees C, and drying outside. We have tested most of the washing products widely available to the consumer. It seems to be impossible to tell from the listed ingredients which products will damage the material and which ones will leave its protective screening properties more or less intact (there is always some slight reduction with washing). It is also impossible to know when the washing product manufacturers' may change the constituents of the product without informing the purchaser.

As a result of this uncertainty, we stock the washing product that we have tested will have the minimum effect on your material. If you handwash the material, we advise that you use Ecover Delicate liquid, which we tested in January 2008 and which has only a very small effect on the screening properties of the material. Ecover powder is not suitable as it does affect the material quite badly. If you wish to use the powder which we provide, then it should be premixed in a jug or similar and added to the material when it has dissolved, so no one part of the material is exposed to a higher concentration of the product than another.
