Substations
Substations are found frequently in residential areas, supplying us with the electricity we have come to depend on. Substation equipment generates electromagnetic fields (EMFs), which also radiate from the associated cables. Most research reporting health effects from EMF sources is based on measured field levels. Relatively low levels of EMFs have been associated with childhood leukaemia, other cancers, depression, miscarriages, and other chronic health problems. Substations come in different sizes depending on the number and type of properties they serve. There are cables going into and out of substations; the ones going in may be overhead or underground, and the ones leaving the substation will usually be underground. These can give off very high fields near to them in homes or properties where they run close to the building or garden. If you are thinking of buying a property near a substation you can hire a PRO meter (only £37.50 per week including p&p), which is very easy to use, and gives an instant reading that can tell you if your proposed purchase is affected by the sort of field levels linked to health problems. The instructions that come with the meter give you the details. If you anticipate a long search for the right home, you may prefer to buy an ELF3030b meter. It certainly is cheaper than buying a home that is affected by EMFs which may not be easy to sell because of it, if you decide you don't want to live there after all. Magnetic fields, once generated by the susbstation are almost impossible to screen against. "Buying an EMF safe property" (freely downloadable - see below) has a section on substations, with a photocopiable worksheet to take with you so you will have all the answers you need to help you make the right decision for you and your family. It is not easy to know where the cables from the substation go. These can give off very high fields - often higher and more widespread than from the substation itself. Net currents (see "Buying an EMF safe property" - Section 3, page 4) can also give unpredictably high EMF levels, blighting the house and garden. It is important to find out especially if your children like to play outside. It is worthwhile and inexpensive for you to find out whether your home is being affected by high EMFs. Homes some distance from substations can have very high fields from under-the-street cables. The only way to find out is by measuring them.
