Yshield Carbon Paint [View User Feedback] One coat of this specialist paint stops over 99.9% of incoming radiation across all mobile phone frequencies, TETRA, 3G, WiFi and WiMax. The paint is easy to apply, is water soluble and can be used inside the house, on walls, ceilings and floors. One coat covers about 7 square metres per litre. If you intend to wallpaper over the paint, you must apply a coat of emulsion paint to seal the carbon paint before applying wallpaper paste. All painted surfaces should be earthed.

The paint can be used outside and one coat covers between 3 to 8 square metres per litre, depending on how rough the surface finish is. E.g You would get 3 square meters per litre on rough plaster.
If the surface to be painted is very porous and absorbs a lot of paint, it may be advisable to use a primer first. If you try to use the paint too thinly e.g. one litre of paint for 20 square meters, the shielding performance will decrease dramatically.
Paint used externally (outside)
Quite stringent legal requirements apply in certain countries with respect to earthing the paint. There is no such requirement in the UK. If you are painting only a part of the outside wall, you may not need to earth it at all. If you are painting the whole wall, we recommend using the special earthing kit which will also comply with European requirements.
Paint used internally (inside your house)
Internal painted walls should be earthed. The paint is conductive and can pick up and re-radiate electric fields from house wiring. This raised level of electric field exposure can make people feel as ill as microwaves can. Please see our earthing instructions page for more detail.
- Ready mixed paint has a limited shelf life and deteriorates whether it is used or not. This applies to all commercial paints, not just microwave screening paints. This is why we cannot offer a returns service.
- The paint is water-based, free of toxic solvents, plasticisers, film-forming agents, and it allows the walls to breathe.
- Because the paint is free of these ingredients, if you wish to wallpaper over the paint, you need to apply a coat of emulsion paint to seal the layer of carbon paint BEFORE using wallpaper paste. This should avoid any chemical reaction between the paint and the wallpaper paste.
- The YShield HSF54 carbon paint is very effective at reducing microwave emissions from an external microwave source such as a mobile phone mast, or an internal source, such as a digital cordless phone in an adjacent property.
- The paint has been tested by the Microwave Laboratory of the University of the German Federal Armed Forces in Munich. One layer has a shielding effectiveness of up to 99.99% Multiple layers can even improve on this.
- For use with roller, brush or sprayer. The paint needs between 12 and 24 hours to dry, depending on temperature and humidity.
Earthing
For most earthing purposes you will only need an earthing lead. This is the case for all internal walls. If you are painting the whole of an outside wall, you should consider the earthing kit.
To ensure good earthing connection from a wall painted with the exterior paint, you might want to use the earthing kit in the picture. Step by step instructions for the mounting of the earthing connection set are sent out with a purchase of the earthing kit.
In some countries, external conductive paint, or metal surfaces, must be earthed by law. In the UK, it is not a legal requirement.
You can use the earthing lead for inside and outside purposes. For use outside, it should be adequately protected from the weather by being painted over with the top coat used to cover the screening paint.
