Block Radiation Carbon Paint
Alert message 100% British product

Blocpaint is a fully British product, is dispatched to you quickly, so you can begin protecting your family usually within a week of ordering. Can be applied with a brush, or roller or even spray painted.

RF Screening paint (carbon) - Blocpaint

Blocpaint stops over 99.9% of incoming radiation across all mobile phone frequencies, TETRA, 3G, WiFi and WiMax. It can be applied with a brush, roller or it can even be spray painted. The paint is easy to apply, is water soluble and can be used inside the house, on walls, ceilings and floors. It is water based, so previously painted walls need only be wiped clean before application. The paint is carbon based (black) and can easily be overpainted with a good quality emulsion paint, two coats being sufficient for even the palest colour topcoat.

YShield Carbon Paint
Alert message Wallpapering over the paint

If you intend to wallpaper over the paint, you must apply a coat of emulsion paint to seal the carbon paint before applying wallpaper paste. Yshield HSF54 should be applied with a long pile roller.

RF Screening paint (carbon) - YShield

One coat of carbon based YShield screening paint stops over 99.9% of incoming radiation across all mobile phone frequencies, TETRA, 3G, WiFi and WiMax. The paint is easy to apply, is water soluble and can be used inside the house, on walls, ceilings and floors.

What is the difference between BlocPaint and Yshield?

They are both almost identical as far as screening effectiveness goes according to our tests. BlocPaint is produced in the UK, and Yshield is produced in Germany. Yshield has been around for years, and the test results show the paint is effective for years. BlocPaint is comparatively new (it was first produced in 2010) and so long term tests are not available. We have no reason to believe it will perform any less effectively than Yshield however.

Testing results show:

Returns

We are not able to accept returns of paint.

Alert message Delivery restrictions

We are not able to deliver paint orders to the Isle of Man or Guernsey due to the difficulties of getting couriers to accept paint shipments. We can ship to another address on the mainland, for you to arrange collection from there, if the mainland address is set up as the delivery address. We can deliver Yshield paint to anywhere in the EU for the same price as shipping within the UK (as we arrange shipping directly from Yshield). However BlocPaint is more expensive to ship outside the UK. Please contact us to arrange alternative shipping arrangements.

Blocpaint comes in tins and we would not recommend sending that by air. Y-Shield is in plastic containers, but should not be allowed to freeze (approx 0 deg C as it has a significant water content). Only suitable for flying long-haul in a hold after checking with the airline. Only some holds in some aircraft are kept above 0 deg C.

Both paints are likely to be radio-opaque and may need special air-security permissions for clearance to fly.

Shelf Life

"Shelf Life" applies to paint still in its container. This is the length of time before the paint becomes less effective. It does not apply to paint once it has been painted on a wall. The shelf life is approximately six months once the container has been opened, and 2 years if the container has not been opened. Once the paint is on a painted wall or other surface, it does not deteroriate in the same way, and will continue to shield the surface for years if not damaged.

Coverage

The paint can be used inside or outside and one coat covers between 3 to 8 square metres per litre, depending on how rough the surface finish is. E.g You would get 3 square meters per litre on rough plaster. On average, on an internal, primed wall, you'd usually get between 7 and 7.5 square meters per litre. If the surface to be painted is very porous and absorbs a lot of paint, it may be advisable to use a primer first. If you try to use the paint too thinly e.g. one litre of paint for 20 square meters, the shielding performance will decrease dramatically.

Paint ingredients

Both paints are water-based, free of toxic solvents, plasticisers, film-forming agents, and they allow the walls to breathe.

Preparing the surface for painting

Prepare the surface as you would do before using any other paint. If you are painting over a surface previously painted with gloss paint, then you must use rough sandpaper to roughen the surface, finer sandpaper to smooth it over and then you should be able to paint with the screening paint.

Applying the paint

Yshield needs to be applied with a long pile roller (due to the length of the carbon molecules in the paint). BlocPaint can be applied with either a brush or a roller, or even a sprayer. Please see the instructions included with your paint and follow them carefully to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Drying time

The paint will require at least 24-48 hours to dry. If the weather is sunny and dry, then it will be at the lower end, if the weather is wet and cold, it could take longer. If in doubt, leave the paint longer to dry. The paint needs to be dry all the way through the paint (chemically dry) and not just "touch" dry, so always leave more time when in doubt. If you put a second coat on too soon, the two coats will bond and you will not get the additional screening protection.

Wallpapering over the paint

Because the paint is free of plasticisers, film forming agents etc, if you wish to wallpaper over the paint, you need to apply a coat of emulsion paint to seal the layer of carbon paint BEFORE using wallpaper paste. This should avoid any chemical reaction between the paint and the wallpaper paste.

Earthing the paint

Alert message It is not always necessary to earth

The paint will screen RF fields whether earthed or not. However, the paint is conductive, so it may pick up electric fields.

When to earth: In very general terms, you probably do not need to earth walls in upstairs rooms, unless you have screened the floor and ceiling as well.

If in doubt: Do a "before" and "after" test for electric fields. Using our PRO meter, or another calibrated electric field meter, measure the electric field, standing on the floor at least a foot away from the wall once you have painted it. Make a note of the readings. Earth the paint, using one of our earthing leads (or earth it yourself using the instructions we supply with the paint, which are replicated below for your use). Measure the electric fields again in the same position. If the fields are higher once you've earthed it, remove the earthing lead. If they drop, leave it there.

Earthing instructions (only if you have determined it needs doing)

  1. Measure a length of wire needed to connect the painted surface to the nearest radiator or socket, plus some spare to allow it to be made secure, avoiding the danger of tripping people up or being torn from the painted surface.
  2. Take the plastic coating off both ends of the wire.
  3. Tape one end of the wire to the painted surface. You may want to splay the wires to get maximum contact.
  4. Attach the other end of the wire:
    1. To a metal part of an earth bonded radiator.
      • You may need to scratch away the paint off a small area to ensure wire to metal contact. Tape in place.
      • Some plumbers use plastic pipes in the radiator system. These systems will not be connected to the house earth. (you should use b)
    2. To the earth pin of a standard plug. Plug it into a socket and the painted area will be connected to the house earth, whether the switch is "on" or "off".

The copper square is backed with conductive glue which you can stick on to the painted surface, after removing the paper backing. The aluminium foil square is then stuck over the copper square to help prevent the wire from being pulled away from the wall. You can then paint over it.

In some countries, external conductive paint, or metal surfaces, must be earthed by law. In the UK, it is not a legal requirement.
